Rick Tarnas, From Psyche to Cosmos: A Journey of Initiation into the Astrological Mystery

Join Richard Tarnas as he discusses the remarkable path that took him from a lifelong scholarly study of depth psychology and Western cultural history to the recognition of astrology's astonishing validity and value in illuminating human experience.  The sequence of steps in his thirty years of research and the resulting changes in his world view represents in some sense a microcosm of the larger intellectual and spiritual journey of the modern mind.  It also shines a light on what is at stake in astrology's challenge to the disenchanted mainstream modern world view, and the special responsibilities and challenges that astrologers must meet to forward the necessary transformation of our cultural cosmology.

Richard Tarnas is a professor of philosophy and cultural history at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, where he founded the graduate program in Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness. He also teaches archetypal studies and depth psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara.  Born in 1950 in Geneva, Switzerland of American parents, he is a graduate of Harvard University and Saybrook Institute.  Formerly the director of programs and education at Esalen Institute, he is the author of The Passion of the Western Mind, a history of the Western world view from the ancient Greek to the postmodern that became both a best seller and a required text in many universities.  His most recent book, Cosmos and Psyche: Intimations of a New World View, received the Book of the Year Prize from the Scientific and Medical Network in England.  He has taught graduate courses and seminars on archetypal astrology in conjunction with psychology, philosophy, and cultural history to many hundreds of students at accredited graduate schools during the past fifteen years.
