THUND’ROUS PORTENTS:

Astrological Forecasting and the American Civil War in the 1860s

Luke Dennis Broughton began publishing Broughton’s Monthly Planet Reader and Astrological Journal on April 1, 1860 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was America’s first astrological magazine. It began as a miscellany aimed at combining the disciplines of Physiognomy, Phrenology, and Astrology,  but it was soon taken over by the momentum of the American Civil War. Much of the material concerns war predictions as well as the horoscopes of notable figures like Abraham Lincoln and General McClelland. By cataloguing Broughton’s successful predictions (and errors), this lecture shows us how astrology was practiced during America’s most dramatic crisis. It also gives us a glimpse into the roots of psychological Astrology as it evolved here in the United States.

Christopher Renstrom is the creator of Rulingplanets.com. It is based on his bestselling book Ruling Planets, which was published by HarperCollins in 2002 and has sold out its print run. Renstrom has been a practicing astrologer since 1985. He currently writes the daily horoscopes for the San Francisco Chronicle (replacing Jeanne Dixon in 1997) and SFGate.com. He created the horoscope column for ALLURE magazine (Conde Nast publications), and he conceived and developed Ask the Astrologer for LifetimeTV.com. Now the exclusive astrologer for Patti Stanger (the Millionaire Matchmaker, BRAVO productions), his popular forecasts appear in three weekly columns on SheKnows.com. Christopher was voted Best Astrologer by City Weekly’s Best of Utah in 2012 and 2013.
